Some people assume that sexual orientation and gender identity are closely linked — but I like to think of them in terms of the elements. Imagine a ship making its way across the ocean.
These individuals have already lived through many different events that helped shape and mold this entire generation. They experienced the terrorist attacks that took place on September 11th. They also experienced America’s first African American president, Barack Obama. They’ve also gotten to be part of the legalization of same-sex marriage. These are but a few examples.
In addition to these life events, mental health has been at the forefront of this generation. Not only are more Gen-Zers likely to openly identify as LGBTQIA+ compared to other generations of individuals, but they are also a lot more honest when it comes to their mental health and their mental health struggles.
Let’s learn more about why anxiety seems to have a greater effect on Gen-Z and what they can do about it.
Financial Stressors
Financial stress is a big part of the struggle that Gen-Zers are facing when it comes to their anxiety and mental health. Many Gen-Zers have the goal of wanting to earn enough money just to live comfortably. While the minimum hourly rate may have increased, there was also an increase in rent, education, automobiles, gas prices, the average cost of owning a home, and more. It can be difficult to feel like you’re on top of your finances when you’re making enough just to get by or living paycheck to paycheck.
Connection
Connection is a big part of the human experience. It can be just as important as food, water, and shelter. Gen-Zers grew up connecting with individuals in different ways. In the past, you could connect with people in person, through email, or phone calls. In today’s world, you can connect with people instantly through social media, direct messaging, video chats, and more. While this can be a positive, it can also bring on challenges. When Gen-Z aren’t connecting with others, they may feel extremely isolated or alone. The relationships they hold need to provide them with an appropriate level of support and stability.
Public and Social Issues
Gen-Zers have access to a lot of things going on in their general area, but also the world around them. They have the news at their fingertips through their television, radio, internet, and social media. Throughout their lifetime, there has been a rise in gun violence and multiple social issues. They’ve lived through multiple school shootings and social issues that are impacting them now and could impact them further in the future. Issues like LGBTQIA+ rights, reproductive rights, racial justice, and healthcare are just a few of the many different social issues that are impacting Gen-Zers.
Lack of Purpose
A lot of Gen-Zers feel the pressure of not having their own purpose or direction in life. A lot of Gen-Zers find meaning and purpose in their life thanks to their schoolwork or their careers. When education or a career is in line with their values, beliefs, and goals, they are more likely to find it rewarding and motivating. When these areas of their life don’t align, Gen-Zers are more likely to find a lack of purpose or meaning in their lives. While a lot of previous generations picked a job and stuck with it, Gen-Zers are more likely to job-hop until they find the right fit.
